Edward Burne-Jones - Study for a 'Masque of Cupid'

pencil
this is an initial study for a painting that was to be called The Masque of Cupid, in the autumn of 1871, following his second visit to Italy. The work was inspired by Spencer's The Faerie Queen. This is the head of Amoret. Other related drawings were made but the painting itself was never started though according to his widow he had it in mind until the last year of his life. The model for the drawing was Maria Zambaco.
